The Story Behind Stitch'd Up and How It Happened

The Story Behind Stitch'd Up and How It Happened

If I’m being honest, Stitch’d Up started the same way most good ideas do in Australia: on a random trip, out in the bush, probably running late, probably covered in dust, and probably halfway stuck.

It was the Bridle Track run that did it. I remember finishing the drive and thinking, how cool would it be to add a patch for this to my little collection? I’d collected a few patches from different places over the years and figured every iconic track should have one.
But when I actually tried to find a Bridle Track patch… nothing.
Not one. Not online. Not at camp spots. Absolutely stitched up.

That’s when I thought of the idea:
“If I can’t find one… maybe I should just make them.”

And the deeper I looked, the more I realised heaps of people felt the same. Social media was full of 4WDers showing off their patches, but everyone kept running into the same problem, the places that actually mattered were missing. The stories, the tracks, the moments… none of them were stitched anywhere.

So I figured, maybe it’s on me to change that.

WHAT “STITCH’D UP” REALLY MEANS

Stitch’d Up isn’t just a cool name, it’s a lifestyle.
Anyone who’s spent more than ten minutes camping or 4WDing knows exactly what I mean. There’s always something that goes sideways:

– getting super bogged
– mates rolling their cars
– a “quick track” turning into a six hour recovery
– bush mechanic repairs at midnight
– finding rust in the chassis of your pride and joy (shoutout Dirty Gary)

Every one of those moments is a proper stitch-up  but they’re also the memories you never forget. They become the stories you tell around the fire. They’re the parts of the trip that bond everyone together.

And that’s exactly what the patches are about.

Every patch tells a story.
Every track, every lookout, every place you’ve been becomes a chapter in your own adventure. When you add a patch to your collection, you’re literally stitching your memories into something real.

I didn’t create this brand to chase dollars , I built it because I wanted people to feel the same excitement and connection that I do. I wanted every collector to have that moment of pride when they grab a new patch and go, “Yep. I earned this.”

HOW THE BLUE MOUNTAINS BUILT THE BRAND

Before Australia, I grew up in South Africa,  camping was a huge part of my life there. Then moving to the Blue Mountains just cranked that love up even more.
Hundreds of tracks, lookouts, rivers, camps… all within a couple hours. You can decide on a random afternoon that you’re heading out for a few days and end up in some of the most beautiful spots in the country. That freedom became a massive part of who I am.

My first 4WD was a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder. Built character. Broke often. But did its job and eventually led me to my pride and joy: Dirty Gary, my 105 Series LandCruiser.
That car alone has influenced half my lifestyle… and about 90% of this business.

Every trip from Fraser Island to the Vic High Country helped shape the idea of Stitch’d Up.
Not just as a store, but a community.
A place where the passion for these vehicles and the adventures they take us on could live somewhere real.

THE FIRST PATCH & THE BIG STITCH-UPS OF STARTING A BUSINESS

The very first patch I made was the one that started everything: The Bridle Track.

Being 22, with no idea how to start a business, how to talk to suppliers, or how to make mockups that didn’t look like they were designed on a potato.

And mate… I copped every possible stitch up along the way:

– suppliers messing up orders
– mockups not matching what I envisioned
– cash flow issues while funding everything on my own
– delays with shipping
– packaging dramas
– website problems
– overthinking absolutely everything

WHO STITCH’D UP IS FOR

This brand is for everyone who lives the lifestyle:

– backpackers exploring Aus
– 4WDers chasing tracks
– campers living on servo pies and sunsets
– young couples travelling Australia
– blokes and gals building rigs in their driveway
– anyone who loves being a little stitch'd up now and then

I want these patches to become something people are proud of.
A badge of honour.
A reminder of the dirt, the memories, the chaos, and the freedom.

But more than a store, I want Stitch’d Up to grow into:

– community
meetups
collabs
track logs
A blog that people enjoy reading
A podcast where we share stories of being stitched up
something that becomes part of every 4WDer’s story, big or small

If someone gets to look back one day and say “this patch reminds me of that trip where we NEARLY”… then I’ve done my job.

THE STITCH’D UP VOICE

This whole brand is built on banter, adventure, and good people.
I want this to feel like chatting around a fire after a long day on the tracks dusty, tired, but smiling because the stitch ups made the trip unforgettable.

This is just the beginning.
Your story is just getting stitch'd in.

Welcome to Stitch’d Up.
